Play's place in tourism and hospitality 🤸‍♀️

The moment you realize that you've stopped playing is probably one of the most depressing moments of your life. It's only when something playful happens to jolt you out of your serious state, that you realize how dreadful life is without play.

Let's say that the average person works 40-hours a week, sleeps 8-hours a day, and commutes 1 hour M-F. That's 101 hours every week dedicated to non-play activities. With 168 hours in a week, you might think "wow! That's 67 hours to dedicate to play every week!" But no. People don't do that.

They spend their 67 hours of "freedom" running errands, paying bills, going to doctor's appointments, cooking & cleaning, fighting with their significant other or children, numbing out to Netflix, working out, worrying, self-grooming, putting in extra work hours, and whatever else demands their attention.

Maybe, just maybe, once in a blue moon they find space & time for play - if they even have the energy for it. Writing this honestly makes me depressed, so I apologize if I've bummed you out. But it's the reality of adulthood, right?

Play is a BIG part of The Storied Experience's mission. Because I believe that adults need to re-learn how to play and how to integrate play back into their lives. I also believe that it's during our leisure travels that we are most connected to play. But as I share in this new article - FUN and PLAY aren't the same thing. And that's where a lot of people get confused.

Play is so much more powerful than simply a fun activity and it has compelling ties to wellbeing and personal growth. So check out the latest article to learn more about play and its place in tourism & hospitality!

What does play look like for you? Your guests? Would love to hear from you on this one! And on a related note - I am now taking clients for Q2 projects. Play is an incredible positioning tool and speaks to the deeper desires of today's stressed out adults. Infusing your experience and brand with play can be a very powerful thing. If you are looking to explore ways to elevate your experience through play and wellbeing, schedule some time to chat!

Nothing roots me into my purpose faster than planning a trip. Oh, the frustration! Each experience, each property seemingly just like the last. They all look the same, they all sound the same. Why? Whyyyyy? “I have decision fatigue!” I cry to my husband, pretending to chuck the laptop out the window. Who knew the paradox of choice could be so disheartening? And I’m a fairly seasoned traveler, shouldn’t this get easier with time? There’s no doubt a recommendation from a well-informed friend is...

Kate: Do you feel like we've been on this vacation before? The scuba diving, we did that in Bali and Costa Rica…. Brad: Yeah, but this is Fiji. We've never been to Fiji. Any Four Christmases fans will recognize this exchange between Reese Witherspoon’s and Vince Vaughn’s characters. And if you think REAL people aren’t thinking & feeling the same way, I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. According to Skift, 70% of US millennials and Gen Zs report that they will be seeking travel...

It’s natural for us to have generalized perceptions of others. During strategy sessions with clients, I've heard all kinds of things from "my guests are happy, they don't have issues" to "I picture the luxury guest as this untouchable, pretentious snob." No judgement, of course. A big part of my job is to help my clients break through those misconceptions and remind them that EVERYONE is human. No matter how much is in their bank account, no matter how perfectly curated their Instagram feed...
