Layering up 🧣 in experience design

I can be pretty lazy when it comes to certain things. For example – outfits. Putting together tops and bottoms and then layering in jackets, scarves, accessories… you know some people just excel at that. If I could just throw on a dress or jumper and never have to think about clothing again, I’d be very happy.

But cooking? I’ll spend hours on Saturday morning planning out my menu for the week, trying to strike the perfect balance of sauces, textures, and nutrients. There’s nothing worse than a dry roast chicken – amiright?

Obviously this attention to detail simply says a lot about my values… I’d rather spend $500 on a farm-to-table dinner or culinary extravaganza than a great outfit. But that’s not the point of this week’s letter. The message I want to drive home today is the importance of LAYERING.

I have yet to find something that doesn’t benefit from layering. Layering gives something depth, nuance, and complexity. For example, I could sit here and just tell you a story. This happened, then this happened, and then this happened – the end.

OR, I could tell you a story AND use gestures, movements, and sound effects to convey the drama. I could also give you something to smell/touch/taste/look at while you’re listening. I could then invite you to partake in some sort of action with me as I’m telling the story.

Can't you feel the difference? It's so easy to tune out during a moment that is one-dimensional. Layers are your protection against mind-wandering!

It's funny, as I was writing this email I received an email from a clothing brand and the subject line was "This is your sign to layer up 🧥" So yes, I'm passing this message on to you: THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO LAYER UP!

Next week I will be sharing a special program that is going to help you infuse each moment of your experience with MORE. More value, more emotion, more layers of richness...

Stay tuned!

Nothing roots me into my purpose faster than planning a trip. Oh, the frustration! Each experience, each property seemingly just like the last. They all look the same, they all sound the same. Why? Whyyyyy? “I have decision fatigue!” I cry to my husband, pretending to chuck the laptop out the window. Who knew the paradox of choice could be so disheartening? And I’m a fairly seasoned traveler, shouldn’t this get easier with time? There’s no doubt a recommendation from a well-informed friend is...

Kate: Do you feel like we've been on this vacation before? The scuba diving, we did that in Bali and Costa Rica…. Brad: Yeah, but this is Fiji. We've never been to Fiji. Any Four Christmases fans will recognize this exchange between Reese Witherspoon’s and Vince Vaughn’s characters. And if you think REAL people aren’t thinking & feeling the same way, I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. According to Skift, 70% of US millennials and Gen Zs report that they will be seeking travel...

The moment you realize that you've stopped playing is probably one of the most depressing moments of your life. It's only when something playful happens to jolt you out of your serious state, that you realize how dreadful life is without play. Let's say that the average person works 40-hours a week, sleeps 8-hours a day, and commutes 1 hour M-F. That's 101 hours every week dedicated to non-play activities. With 168 hours in a week, you might think "wow! That's 67 hours to dedicate to play...
